Description

A Dartmoor landscape depicting the view of Brent Tor from Black Down. Presented glazed in a white mount with gold detailing and a distressed gilt-effect wooden frame. Signed to the lower-left edge. There is a gallery label on the verso which includes the title, taken from the verso of the painting. On watercolour paper.

Condition

There is some slight foxing and discolouration but overall the painting in bright and in very good condition for its age. There are some mild chips and scuffs to the frame.

Artist Biography

Philip Mitchell RI (1814-1896) was a watercolour painter of seascapes, the Cornish coast, and landscapes. He was born in Devonport. He exhibited first in 1846 at the Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society Annual Exhibition, where he won a Bronze Medal for his watercolour View of Falmouth Harbour, and a First Class prize for his chalk drawing of Roche Rocks. He exhibited a total of 338 works at the Royal Institute, previously the New Watercolour Society. He was a member of Plymouth Sketching Club.
