Artist Biography

Philip Hugh Padwick (1876-1958) was a painter born in Horsham, Sussex the son of a barrister and a Justice of the Peace. Padwick studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London. He subsequently worked primarily as a landscape painter. Padwick began exhibiting in 1908 and over the next four decades showed at Barbizon House, Chenil Gallery, Fine Art Society, International Society of Sculptors, Painters & Gravers, New English Art Club, Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Ridley Art Club, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Walker's Gallery, Royal Cambrian Academy, Royal Hibernian Academy, Royal Scottish Academy and at the Paris Salon. He was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1908 and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1927.

Padwick's paintings mostly have a sombre dark feel and appear stylistically to have been executed 50 years earlier than they were. Examples of his work are in the collections of Brighton and Hove Museums and Art Galleries, Derby Art Gallery, Gallery Oldham, Glasgow Museums, Lakeland Arts Trust, National Trust for Scotland, Newport Museum and Art Gallery, Northampton Museum and Art Gallery, Potteries Museum and Art Gallery, Rye Art Gallery, Southend Museums Service and Worthing Museum and Art Gallery. Padwick lived for several years in Fittleworth, Sussex where he died on 16 October 1958. The value of his estate for probate was the 2015 equivalent of £1.3 million.
