Philip Hugh Padwick (1876-1958) - Early 20th Century Oil Village Church

Description

A dramatic early 20th Century scene in muted sepia oils, showing a quaint village church under overcast skies. The naive style lends itself to the harsh natural light, casting the buildings into sharp relief and adding much drama and atmosphere to the scene. The artist has signed to the lower left (partially obscured by the frame) and the painting has been presented in a 20th Century grey and gilt frame with white slip. There is a label at the reverse with the artist's name and title of the painting. On canvas board.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. Small loss to the paint at the left edge.

Artist Biography

Landscape painter, born in Horsham, Sussex. He studied at Slade School of Fine Art. Was an extensive exhibitor, including RBA and ROI of both of which he was a member, Fine Art Society, RA, RHA and Paris Salon. His Littlehampton Front, painted in 1923, owned by Astley Cheetham Art Gallery, Stalybridge, was included in a tribute to the dealer Lucy Wertheim, who showed him, Salford Museum and Art Gallery and tour, 1991–2. Padwick’s work looked back in subject and technique to the eighteenth century. Lived in Fittleworth, Sussex.
