Artist Biography

Painter born and educated in Birmingham, he trained at the Birmingham School of Art, 1939-43 and again 1946-49 where he gained several awards. A member of various Art Societies, he exhibited with several group-exhibitions, Royal Society of Portrait Painters, 'Observer' Child Portraits Exhibition and also taught at Birmingham School of Art and at Bournville School of Art. Gross was elected an Associate of the RBSA in 1955 and a full member in 1961. He became President of the Society in 1980 a post he held for three years and also held a similar post with the Birmingham Art Circle. His group exhibitions included RP and other shows in the West Midlands. He also held solo exhibitions at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, Birmingham Crescent Theatre and Redditch College of Further Education. Predominantly a portrait painter in oils, his public commissions included many prominent figures of the West Midlands including the Right Reverend Mervyn Charles-Edwards, the former Bishop of Worcester.
