Description
A fine 19th century portrait by the artist Paul Martin (1821–1901) depicting a gentleman in 17th-century military attire. He wears a heavy olive coat worn over a plain white linen collar, with a breastplate beneath. Across his chest runs a leather baldric with a brass buckle, used to carry a sword. Painted with accomplished brushwork and a masterful handling of light. Signed and dated. Well presented in a vintage frame. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
Fine craquelure throughout. The artwork has been previously restored, including small areas of overpainting and relining. Some wear to the frame, including scuffs, chips and indentations. There is a loss to the lower rail. Overall, the artwork is in very good condition for its age.
