Paul Klapper (1864 -1928) - Framed Oil Portrait of Saint Jerome
Description
This 19th-century oil painting depicts Saint Jerome during his period of ascetic retreat in the Syrian desert. The elderly saint is shown as a penitent hermit, his muscular form partially draped in animal skins, his downward gaze conveying spiritual devotion. The presence of a lion's mane, Jerome's traditional attribute referencing the legend in which he removed a thorn from the beast's paw confirms his identity. Executed in a realist style with skilled handling of flesh tones and atmospheric effects, the work is housed in an elaborate gilt frame with Baroque ornamentation. Signed 'P. Klapper' to the upper right and dated '97. On canvas.Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age. Inspection under UV light reveals minor restoration and overpainting. A tear in the canvas has been fully repaired to the reverse. Light impressions in the canvas caused by the reverse stretcher bars. There is some surface craquelure and light soiling. The gilt effect frame shows minor wear including stable cracking and small chips to the outer profile. The overall condition of the artwork is very good.
