A young woman holding a string of rosary beads kneels at the foot of a nun, who tenderly holds her hand. Signed and dated to the lower right. Well presented in a gilt-effect frame with a wash-line mount. On paper.

Artist Biography

Paul Falconer Poole RA (1807-1879) was a British history and genre painter. Although self-taught, his fine feeling for colour, poetic sympathy, and dramatic power gained him acclaim. Poole exhibited several works at the Royal Academy, the first at the age of twenty-five. He was elected an associate of the Royal Academy in 1846, and was made an academician in 1861.
