A very fine watercolour portrait of two French aristocratic children by the listed artist Paul de Katow (1834-1897), in a bucolic woodland setting. Both children are dressed in the late 19th Century French fashion, with the girl clutching her hat. The young boy is depicted holding a white stick, with three more on the log behind. These may be part of a 'game of graces', a popular upper class game originating in France.
Katow has a distinct realist style, with a very delicate palette. The overall composition indicates an influence of early 19th Century portraiture, with an extremely formal style. Delicate facial features have been portrayed well, and the jacket of the young boy displays particularly fine detail.
Well-presented in a gilt mount and gilt wooden frame with foliate mouldings. Signed and dated and inscribed. On watercolour paper.
The condition is good for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There is some light foxing to the upper areas of the work. The frame has surface marks and scratches to the gilt mount. The corners have some minor losses and scuffing.

Paul de Katow (1834-1897) was a French painter and writer, born in Strasbourg, Eastern France. He was a student of Eugene Delacroix (1798-1863), and later exhibited at the Paris Salon. He became a war correspondent of the Gaulish in 1870.
