P. Henson - Double-Sided 1949 Gouache St John's Chapel Tower of London

Description

An atmospheric gouache painting of the interior of St John's Chapel at the Tower of London. A Romanesque chapel, St John's is on the second floor of the White Tower which was built from 1077-97 as a keep or citadel, the oldest part of William the Conqueror's powerful fortress. Initialled and dated to the lower-right edge and inscribed with the location to the lower-right margin. There is a second gouache painting on the reverse depicting a spiral stone staircase. On wove laid to card.

Condition

There is some mild foxing and discolouration, primarily to the margins.

Collection Information

A collection of paintings depicting views and architectural details of the Tower of London, dated 1949. The majority are inscribed with details about the scenes on the reverse which are written with care and fascination, the portfolio perhaps originally being intended as a gift or as a preparatory manuscript for publication. The surname of the artist was inscribed on the portfolio's original folder.
