Gouache paintings such as this were popular souvenirs for travellers undertaking the 'Grand Tour,' an extended educational journey undertaken by young men from the British upper class during the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries. This scene depicts the Villa Reale (now the Villa Comunale) in Naples, an essential destination on the Grand Tour. The work is well presented in a gilt frame. Unsigned. On paper.

Signs of wear consistent with age including some marks to the surface. Slight water damage on the lefthand edge. Scuffs and scratches to the frame.
