Description

An idyllic river scene in watercolour from the late 19th Century/early 20th Century, showing a river bank with reeds and the river winding off towards an old watermill in the distance. Swallows fly low over the water and the glassy surface reflects the sky. The artist has signed to the lower left corner and the painting has been handsomely presented in a exquisite 19th Century frame with a rounded profile, beaded strap work, low relief molding with crisp motifs including floral fans and scrolling acanthus leaves. The frame is finished with a gold mount. There is a framer's label at the reverse, a label with the artist's name and address and a newspaper article about the artist. On wove.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. The frame is in remarkable condition with only minor losses at the upper left edge.

Artist Biography

Oliver Baker (1856-1939) was an English paint, etcher, designer and silversmith, best known for his role in the development of the Cymric Silverware line for Liberty & Co.
Baker was born in Birmingham, the son of the artist Samuel Henry Baker. He studied under his father, with whom he shared a studio in Edgbaston, and at the Birmingham School of Art. He exhibited at the Royal Academy frequently from 1883 and was elected a member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists in 1884
