Artist Biography
Landscape painter born in Alfreton, Derbyshire. Active mainly in the 1930’, Whitehead was greatly influenced by the works of Paul Nash. His school teachers encouraged his art but he never received any formal art training apart from joining his local Alfreton Art Club in 1932. His first employment was with his family in their haulage business.
At the outbreak of World War II, Whitehead became involved in the Pacifist Movement and travelled to London to join rallies eventually becoming a ‘conscientious objector’ but later joined the war effort by driving an ambulance in his home county. However, his painting period came to an end and after 1947 he never painted again. After his death his widow donated many of his works to local museums some of which can be seen at the Erewash Museum in Ilkeston.
