Description

A charming depiction of a crofter's cottage and smallholding in the Scottish Highlands. A lady can be seen in a wooden chair to the front of the cottage mending a quilt, while a menagerie of farm animals fills the foreground. The composition has been signed by the artist to the lower right. Well presented in a gilt-effect frame. On paper.

Minor foxing to the watercolour and light wear to the gilt-effect frame.

Artist Biography

Carlisle-born painter who attended Carlisle School of Art studying under James Atherton. He became a designer for the Metal Box Company and showed his paintings at the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Royal Academy and Royal Scottish Academy. A landscape, almost certainly a Lake District view, is in the collection of Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery.
