A large mezzotint print by Norman Hirst (1862-1956) depicting Lady Catherine Rouse Boughton after a painting by George Romney (1734-1802). The original portrait was commissioned by Catherine's husband Charles William Boughton. Charles belonged to a long-established aristocratic family but, as the second son, was not heir to the family seats. However, in 1768 he inherited the estates of his maternal cousin, Thomas Philips-Rouse. Charles commissioned the portrait of Catherine soon after their marriage in 1782.
It was originally planned to incorporate her young daughter in the portrait. However, Romney’s ledger book shows the words “with a child” crossed out. In 1998 the painting was cleaned and an x-ray was taken of the portrait, which revealed underpainting for the child. The x-ray photograph shows the little girl sitting to her mother’s right. It is not known why the child was subsequently painted out.

Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration, dirtying, and foxing to the paper. Small tear to the lower left. Wear around the edges.
