Description

This striking oil scene depicts The Abduction of the Sabine Women, a tale from ancient Roman history. The accounts of Livy and Plutarch claim that after the city of Rome was founded an elaborate plot was made to steal the woman of the neighbouring town of Sabine, so that Roman lineage would prosper. When Sabine's men and their wives were invited to a summer festival, a signal from Roman ruler Romulus gave his men permission to seize the women and take them as their wives.

In this dramatic painting, Mann captures the chaos of the moment the women are taken. The desperate gestures of the women and struggle in the foreground are juxtaposed with the calmness of Romulus sitting on his throne watching the panic unfold.

Signed with initials to the lower right.

On canvas laid to board.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There is craquelure to the surface. There is damage to the corners of the painting causing some creasing and the canvas to fray.
