Artist Biography

David Woodlock (1842-1929) was an Irish-born painter known for his idyllic, chocolate-box Victorian scenes in both oils and watercolours. He studied at the Liverpool School of Art under John Finnie and was a founding member of the Liver Sketching Club, as well as a member of the Liverpool Academy of Arts. Woodlock exhibited extensively at the Walker Art Gallery and also showed work at the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, Royal Academy of Arts, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, Royal Scottish Academy, and the Dudley Gallery Art Society. Although a prolific exhibitor, census records from 1871 and 1891 list him as a draper, suggesting he pursued painting only part-time. His work is held in public collections including Bangor University, Merthyr Tydfil Museum & Art Gallery, National Museums Liverpool, and the Williamson Art Gallery.
