Description

A seamstress labours by candlelight within a modest interior in this evocative nineteenth-century oil painting. A label affixed to the reverse of the panel attributes the work to Petrus van Schendel (1806-1870), who was known for his atmospheric candlelit scenes. The work is unsigned. Well presented in a swept gilt frame with floral corner ornamentation and a beaded running pattern. On panel.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age, including some discolouration. Areas of overpainting. Light wear to the frame, including scuffing and a small loss to the righthand edge. Overall, the condition is good for a picture of this age.
