Nathaniel Sparks (1880-1956) was a painter and etcher from Bristol who is known for his topographical views of his home city and of London, where he lived for much of his life. An exceptional technician Sparks worked with Frank Short and for James Whistler, for whom he acted as a full-time printer and was responsible for the proofs of his Venice plates and others. The son of a violin maker he attended Bristol School of Art before attending the Royal College of Art. Sparks was elected Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers in 1910 and also showed at the Chenil Gallery, Connell & Sons, Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Royal Academy and Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. Following an auspicious early career, he withdrew from the public eye and abandoned printmaking in 1938, arguably because of the collapse in the print market and his own over sensitive nature. Examples of his work are in the collections of Ashmolean, Bristol City Art Gallery, British Museum, Dorset County Museum and Victoria and Albert Museum.
