Nadia Cockayne (b.1933) - Contemporary Oil, Frederick Speight II
Description
A striking and atmospheric three quarter length portrait of a seated man. The artist has used a monochrome brown palette to create a dark mood, with the sitter's body being faced away from the viewer and his head turned towards them, arms crossed, creating a discordant relationship between viewer and sitter. The accomplished and restrained use of lighting adds more mood and depth to the portrait. The sitter is a man named Frederick William Speight. Sulis also have a portrait in the same format by the artist of the sitter a year after this painting was created. There is an inscription at the reverse of the frame with the artist's name, date and title of painting and where it was painted. The painting has been presented in a simple gilt frame. On board.Condition
There is some light scuffing to the surface, in particular at the top left quadrant where there is a horizontal scratch to the paint.

Artist Biography
Nadia was born Nadia Szynkiewicz in Buffalo, New York, USA.
She gained her Masters at Philadelphia School of Art.
She worked for a time as an illustrator and artist in New York city before moving to England with her husband, Jeremy Cockayne.
She lived in Suffolk on the banks of the Stour for 12 years where she painted landscapes in oils and did some fine glass engravings.
Later, she moved to York and, her children being grown up, she had more time for painting and had several successful exhibitions of still lives and landscapes at the Stonegate Gallery.
At this time she was also in demand as a portrait painter and was asked to paint Christopher Rowntree. This portrait still hangs in the Merchant Adventurers Hall in York.
In her later years she produced some very fine oil pastel landscapes.
Following the death of her husband she moved to Rye in East Sussex.
