A very fine miniature portrait of Mary Knottesford Fortescue (1841-1879). Mary was the daughter of Edward Bowles Knottesford Fortescue (1816-1877), who was an English Anglican priest who, in later life converted to Catholicism.
In this portrait, Mary is possibly 15 and wears her hair in a fashion popular during the mid-19th century. Her pretty brown eyes are wonderfully painted with fine touches of body colour which gives the portrait a sense of depth. Inscribed to the reverse is a handwritten note detailing the sitter and family history. "Mary Knottesford Fortescue painted about 1856 by Mrs Scott of Perth. I received this today from Alice K-Fortescue for a painted photograph of her husband Edward K-Fortescue. 25.2.1897".
Alice (also known as Alicia) was married to Mary's brother Edward Francis (1840-1886).
Well presented in a papier-mache frame with an oval window. With original rose and acorn brass hanger and glazed dome.
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and foxing. The papier-mache frame is stable, although there are hairline cracks on the surface of the frame.
