Description

A beautiful and sensual portrait of Venus, surrounded by cherubs and doves, reclining on an ocean wave. Venus, the goddess of love, was born full-grown from the foam of the sea. This particular composition is clearly inspired by the original 1740 masterpiece by François Boucher. The sensual pose and voluptuous form of Venus, with her softly curving arms raised above her, entwined in her hair, highlight her position as goddess of Love and Plenty.

The drawing is in a mixture of watercolour pencil, graphite and watercolour wash and has been executed with a restrained hand. The drawing is unsigned and presented in an early 20th Century frame with foliate acanthus leaf molding and a contemporary gilt finish. The frame has been completed with a card mount.

On canvas.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration, fading and several foxed spots. The frame has slight splitting at the corners, but is in, otherwise, fine condition.
