We are proud to present this stunning 19th century study of a young lady with lambs seated in an idyllic landscape. The attention given to the woman's facial features and sensitive handling of tone perfectly captures the essence of the sitter; her demure smile and idealized face demonstrates a commonly used practice by 19th century artists to convey a sense of innocence. The sheep huddle around the figure hinting at the artist's idealised view of the woman's rural lifestyle. Idyllic representations of rural life were popular subject matters in the 19th Century, particularly amongst the Victorian middle classes.
This painting is beautifully presented in an ornate gilt frame with beading, leaf and berry patterning and scrolling decoration to the corners. Inspection under UV light reveals some restoration. There is some retouching to the paint and a repaired tear to the lower right edge, visible from the reverse. With craquelure across the artwork and some discolouration and blistering to the varnish. Losses to the frame and been filled and repainted.
