A charming interior scene depicting a mother reading to a baby in a darkened interior. The figures are softly lit by the glow of the fire which gently illuminates the scene. A fascination with Medieval times bought about a great gothic revival during the 19th century. It's influence on architecture, literature and art was evident, and from this the Troubadour style of painting gained popularity. The Troubadour style is reflected in this painting through it's it idealised portrayal of medieval life and the strong narrative scene that it sets.
Unsigned. Presented in a gilt frame with a deep cove and beaded running pattern.
On canvas.The painting is in good condition for its age, with minor craquelure to the surface. The canvas has been relined. The is some scuffing and small losses to the frame.
