An impressionistic watercolour of a Cornish town, possibly St Ives. Presented glazed in a cream mount and wooden frame. Unsigned. Inscribed to the reverse with details of provenance. On watercolour paper.

Some minor marks to the mount and frame. Overall in very good condition.

Artist Biography

Marjorie Mostyn (1893-1979 was a painter born in Bushey, Hertfordshire. She was the daughter of artist Tom Mostyn and sister to Dorothy Mostyn, also an artist. Mostyn studied at St John’s Wood School of Art, studying under Leonard Walker, then at the Royal Academy Schools from 1912-15 where her teachers included John Singer Sargent, William Orpen, and George Clausen. She won silver and bronze medals and gained a British Institution Scholarship for painting in 1915. In 1917 she married artist Leonard Fuller and settled with him in St Ives, Cornwall, in 1938. There Leonard opened the St Ives School of Painting, which he ran until his death in 1973 when Mostyn took it over. Known as 'Nancy' to her family and friends, during the 1920s she designed a series of 'glamour' postcards for Raphael Tuck: Girls of Today and Dream of Fair Women etc. She was a founder member of the Penwith Society of Arts in 1949 as well as being a member of the St Ives Society of Artists and the Newlyn Society. She exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts, the Royal Cambrian Academy, of which she was a member, Royal Society of Portrait Painters, and the Society of Women Artists, where she was also a member. Examples of her work are held in the collections of New County Hall, Truro and the National Trust.
