Description

A fine and highly detailed portrait in pastel of a black Labrador named 'Jill', by the well-listed animal portraitist Marjorie Cox (1915-2003). Cox captures intricate expressive features of well-loved pets, and this work is a prime example. The artist's technique is masterly, layering tones in order to produce a vivid and arresting realist portrait. She utilises the substrate in order to enhance texture and form, alongside fine detailing in the whiskers and eyes, producing a glassy effect that is highly skilled in this medium. Signed and inscribed 'Jill, June 1962' in the lower right hand corner. Presented in a gilt frame with card mount. On wove.
