Description

An idyllic late nineteenth-century rural scene by Dutch artist Marinus Heijl (1836-1931). A woman washes clothes in a canal whilst the verdant trees and rustic farm buildings are reflected in the tranquil water. Signed and dated to the lower right. Well presented in an antique gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

The condition is very good for a picture of this age. Craquelure and slight discolouration. Areas of overpainting. Scuffs and small chips to the frame.

Artist Biography

Marinus Heijl (1836-1931) was a Dutch landscape painter. Heijl was to become a priest, but instead decided to pursue painting. He studied at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, and became a member of “Arti et Amicitiae” in 1871, where he later held a board position for several years. He owned a studio in Amsterdam where he trained young painters such as Geo Poggenbeek and Nicolaas Bastert. He was also a professor at the Amsterdam Rijksakademie. His style was strongly influenced by painters from the Hague School. Examples of his work are held by the Rijksmuseum, the Museum of Modern Art in Arnhem, and the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem, amongst others.
