Margaret Graeme Niven (1906-1997) - Framed Mid 20th Century Oil Trinkets

Description

A wonderful mid-century still life by the English artist Margaret Graeme Niven. Here she has captured a selection of trinkets and home decor, including a yellow glass candlestick, a porcelain vase and various china bowls. Well presented in a vintage effect white wood frame. Signed to the upper left and lower right. Inscribed to the reverse with the artist's name and also with a James Bourlet & Sons label fixed to the left stretcher. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some very minor surface marks. There is some paint loss to the lower right corner, however, the flaking paint appears to be stable. Minor scuffs to the frame. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration.

Artist Biography

Niven was born in Marlow and was a painter of landscapes, portraits and flowers in oil, Margaret Graeme Niven was the daughter of the artist William Niven A.R.E. She studied at Winchester School of Art, at Heatherley’s, and under Bernard Adams. Niven’s work was exhibited widely in London and the provinces, and is represented in several public collections. She lived for many years in Wormley in Surrey. Member Societies; Royal Institute of oil painters; National Society of Painters, Sculptors and Gravers.
