Artist Biography

Malcolm Osborne was an etcher and engraver who was born in Frome, Somerset. He studied at Bristol School of Art and at the RCA under Lethaby and Short. Early in World War I, Osborne joined the Artists' Rifles and was commissioned in 1915, seeing continuous action in France, Macedonia, and Palestine. Osborne, who was a member of the Art Workers' Guild, exhibited regularly with the RA and RE and was elected an Associate of the RE in 1905, RE in 1909, an Associate of the RA in 1918, and a full member of the Royal Academy in 1926. He was also President of the RE through the years of World War II. He held his first solo exhibition of etchings at the Rembrandt Gallery, London, in 1929, and others followed at the FAS and the Leicester Galleries. Osborne also exhibited with the Lake Artists Society, RBC, Abbey Gallery, Beaux Arts Gallery, Chenil Gallery, Fine Art Society, Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Walker Art Gallery, Royal Academy, Ridley Art Club, Royal Scottish Academy, and at the Ipswich Fine Art Club in 1923. He taught at the RCA, where he was ultimately Professor of Engraving, and was awarded a CBE in 1948. Examples of his works are in the collection of the NPG, Museums Sheffield, the University of Michigan Museum of Art, Tate Gallery, V&A, and the BM.
