Lucien Pissarro was a painter, wood engraver and book designer. Born in Paris, he was the son of the great Impressionist Camille Pissarro, and father of Orovida Pissarro. Lucien studied under his father and exhibited at the last Impressionist exhibition, held in 1886 and was also influenced by the neo-Impressionist, Seurat. He settled in London in 1890 and eventually took British nationality in 1916. In 1893, he moved to Epping where he ran the Eragny Press, 1894-1914 and exhibited with the NEAC from 1904, becoming a member in 1906. He was a founder member of the Camden Town Group, in 1911 and of the short-lived Monarro Group in 1919. His first British solo exhibition was held at the Carfax Gallery, London, 1913. Pissarro also exhibited at the RA, Chenil Gallery, Goupil Gallery, ISSPG, WAG, Leicester Galleries, RHA, Redfern Gallery, RSA, Ruskin Galleries, Red Rose Guild of Craftsmen and with the AA and SWE. His work was reproduced in the short-lived obscure Apple Magazine, The Venture and other periodicals of the time.
Lucien Pissarro maintained an impressionist approach to landscape to the end of his life, albeit with less excitement than this movement had originally inspired. After some years of declining health, Lucien Pissarro died on 10 July 1944 at Hill Cottage, Hewood, Dorset, where he had lived since 1940. A memorial exhibition was held at the Leicester Galleries in 1946 and the Arts Council of Great Britain organised a centenary retrospective in 1963. Works by Lucien Pissarro are in the Ashmolean, Ben Uri Gallery, Brighton and Hove Museums and Art Galleries, Fitzwilliam Museum, Hull University, in regional galleries including Metropole Art Collection, Museums Sheffield, Rochdale Art Gallery, Worthing Art Gallery, Tate Gallery, Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery and the William Morris Museum and in public collections abroad.
