Lowes Cato Dickinson was a painter of portraits born in Kilburn, London, the son of a lithographic printer. His first employment was in his father Bond Street business and in 1850 with a desire to be an artist he left for Italy where he remained for three years. Dickinson returned to London and took a studio from where he built a fine business as a portrait painter. His socialist ideas were seen in his involvement in establishing the London Working Men's College with fellow Christian Socialists lawyer Tom Hughes, the writer Charles Kingsley and F. D. Maurice. In 1864 he and his wife took a cottage at Hanwell, now close to what was to become Heathrow Airport. During his 15 years there, he taught art with several of the pre-Raphaelite artists such as Madox Brown, Edward Burne-Jones and Arthur Hughes.
Examples of his work are held in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery, Aberdeen University, National Army Museum, Victoria & Albert Museum, Berwick Museum and Art Gallery, Abbot Hall Art Gallery, Royal Institute of British Architects, National Trust, Rochdale Arts & Heritage Service, National Maritime Museum, Government Art Collection, Maidstone Museum & Bentlif Art Gallery, Doncaster Art Gallery and at Universities around the British Isles. He exhibited on a few occasions at the Royal Academy of Arts and after his death, his two sons and five daughters founded the Lowes Dickinson memorial studentship at the London Working Men's College for the study of art abroad.
