Description

A double-sided watercolour study of Chapelle de Notre Dame de Vie, Mougins, France, beneath a starry sky. The chapel is Romanesque in style and dates back to the 16th Century. To the lower left edge the artist has titled the work with an English translation, 'Our Lady of Life'. There is also a signature to the lower left edge. On the reverse is another watercolour landscape of a tree and village in the distance with the location inscribed, 'Gagnes'. On watercolour paper.

Condition

Some mild scuffs, foxing, and discolouration to the edges. Overall in good condition.

Artist Biography

Lily Florence Waring was born in Birkenhead, Wirral and studied at Manchester School of Art, Cambridge School of Art, and in Paris. A key member of the Suffrage Movement, in 1911 Waring was appointed to the official position of National Organiser for the Women’s Suffrage Society. On a visit to Penwortham in Preston she was described as 'Women’s Suffrage Agitator'.

Waring exhibited many paintings at the Beaux Arts Gallery, London, RI, RBA and UA. Examples of her work are in the collection of Warrington Museum and Art Gallery. Alongside her political and artistic work, Waring was an academic specialising in Serbian Studies and an author of poetry and fiction.
