A charming summer scene of a thatched cottage on a country lane. A figure with a walking stick can be seen walking down the lane to the right of the composition. Presented in white washline mount and a distressed gilt-effect wooden frame. On watercolour paper.

There is some very minor foxing and discolouration but overall in fine condition.

Artist Biography

Tom Clough (1867-1943) was a painter, born in Bolton, Lancashire. He trained as a lithographic printer before turning to painting around 1890. He traveled widely, painting in Wales, South West England, Italy, and Concarneau in France. He later lived in Betws-y-Coed, North Wales. An elected member of the RCamA, he also showed at the Baillie Gallery, RCamA, RA, ROI, RI, Manchester City Art Gallery, RBA, and Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. Bolton Art Gallery house a large collection of his work together with letters and articles relating to his life. His son, Thomas Collingwood Clough, was also an artist and they are sometimes confused. Clough Snr. died in Llandudno, Conway, Wales.
