Leslie Benenson was a listed painter, illustrator, sculptor and printmaker, born in London. Chronic ill health as a child prevented much involvement with horses but she began to sketch animals regularly at Regent’s Park Zoological Gardens during the 1950’s. From 1951 she was guided through the Royal Drawing Society by the animal artist Gertrude Holman and during this period she gained eleven Royal Drawing Society Gold Awards for animal drawing. From 1958 to 1963 she trained as a sculptor at Regent Street Polytechnic under Geoffrey H. Deeley and gained a Nuffield Grant in 1963 to study resin casting techniques. She also studied wood engraving and calligraphy and became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers in 1978. Since 1963 she lived in Sussex where she worked as a sculptor, wood engraver and calligrapher. Beneson mainly used pastels, drawing Arab stallions and mountain and moorland breeds. She exhibited her work at the SEA of which she was a founder member and she was also a member of the Society of Scribes & Illuminators. Beneson passed away in 2018.
