Description

A fine etching of lambeth Palace from the River Thames in London, etched by the artist Leonard Squirrel. The etching is presented as an illustration above the 'Calendarium Londinense', or a calendar for the year 1945. There is a short history of the palace inscribed in the centre of the calendar. The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. Two very small worm holes to the image.

Artist Biography

Printmaker and illustrator born in Ipswich who attended Ipswich School of art where he studied under George Rushton and at the Slade School of Fine Art where his tutors included Henry Tonks. Squirrel was elected RE in 1919, RI in 1931 and RWS in 1941. He also exhibited at the Abbey Gallery, Connell & Sons, FAS, GI, MAFA, NEAC, RA, RHA, RSA, Sole Bay Group and at the Walker Art Gallery. He was briefly a member and exhibitor at Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle in 1932 but was a member of the Ipswich Art Club from 1914 until his death. In 1929, he succeeded Charles Edward Baskett as a teacher of etching at his Ipswich alma mater where he remained until 1940.
