A very fine early 20th century still life by the Belgian artist Leo van Droogenbroeck. This well painted and composed still life is full of interesting trinkets, each with their own symbolism. A recurring theme of knowledge and enlightenment is present within this study, through the use of the large books, candle, quills, pestle and mortar and porcelain medicine jar. Van Droogenbroeck has clearly drawn inspiration from the 'Golden Age' of Dutch painting, with his muted colour palette and use of light and shadow.
The fine still life is well presented in a wooden frame with gilt detailing. Also with a small name plaque.
Signed and dated. On board.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some craquelure, discolouration and surface dirt. There are minor surface abrasions inspection under UV light reveals very small dabs of overpainting to various areas, touching up flecks of paint loss. Most noticeably to the lower left corner. There is some minor ware to the upper right, near the signature. Overall the condition is very good.

Leo Van Droogenbroeck was born in Antwerp in 1905, where he continued to live and work for most of his life. He is known for his fine still life compositions and landscapes of the European countryside. He died in 1995.
