A carefully detailed realist gouache painting with pastel details, by the maritime artist Laurence Cyril Bagley (1922-1983). Depicting the military boat M1972 offshore, armed with mounted guns and artillery, another vessel can be seen in the distance to the right. Bagley had fine brush control and an impressive skill for depicting military subjects. His shading and detail, despite a monochrome palate, is evident of an artist in his prime. Signed. On wove.

In very good condition overall. There is a water stain to the upper part of the left edge.

Artist Biography

Laurence Cyril Bagley (1922-1983) was an artist born in Southampton, United Kingdom. Best known for his marine and aviation paintings, he was also a writer and illustrator. After working as an artist for a variety of magazines and publications, including Flight magazine and British Rail, Bagley was commissioned by the government to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II's coronation in 1953. Three of his paintings are in the Government Art Collection of the United Kingdom, and one hangs in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in Central London.
