This fine portrait study in oil depicts an uncommon scene of a gentleman in a tavern, reading a newspaper. A broken glass bottle sits opposite him, on a rustic stool. The artist depicts the figure in dress suggestive of the 17th century, wearing a tunic, leather boots and small burgundy cap.
Handsomely presented in a gilt wooden frame, with inner beaded moulding. On canvas laid to board.
In good condition overall. Inspection under UV light reveals surface restoration across the surface. Some minor craquelure. The frame is in very good condition, with light scuffing.
