Late 19th Century Oil - Sergeant Major Thomas Bent

Description

A characterful and finely detailed oil portrait of Thomas Bent, the Sergeant Major of the Leicester Infirmary who died in 1870. The artist has used thinned oil to give a translucency to the sitter's skin and a depth of colour in his black jacket and waistcoat. The artist has picked out the Sergeant's tie, tie pin and fob watch in fine detail. The painting has been presented in a contemporary gilt oval frame. There is an inscription at the reverse taken from the original 19th Century frame, with the sitter's name and date of death. On board.
