A late 19th-century oil study depicting fishing boats gathered at sea close to the harbour walls, capturing a quiet coastal scene with a traditional maritime character. The artist combines more expressive, visible brushwork in the handling of the water and sky with a broadly naturalistic approach to the boats and harbour. Acquired as part of a pair, the companion painting (SZ678) does not bear a signature, suggesting they were originally conceived and painted together. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
Minor surface marks and abrasions. A light, even patina of age is present across the surface of the artwork. Small, localised losses to the paint layer. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of previous restoration. Some minor scattered overpainting to areas of paint loss. Wear to the edges of the canvas/panel/board. The artwork is in good condition for its age.
