Artist Biography

Frederick William John Shore (1844–1916), 4th Baron Teignmouth, was a British army officer and painter known for his evocative landscape paintings of India, Kashmir, Gibraltar, and North Africa. Born into a prominent family, Shore inherited the title of Baron late in life, in 1915, just a year before his death. He served with distinction in the Royal Horse Artillery, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Much of his military service was spent in British India, particularly in Sialkot (in present-day Pakistan), a location that served as a gateway to Kashmir and clearly inspired much of his artistic work. Shore was a prolific watercolourist and landscape painter, drawing heavily from the striking natural scenery he encountered during his travels and military assignments. His works often depict serene rivers, mountainous vistas, and reflections in water, which he painted with notable sensitivity to light and atmosphere. He exhibited his work at prestigious venues, including the Royal Academy, where he showed views of Gibraltar and Morocco in the 1880s. His paintings are valued today not only for their artistic merit but also for their historical documentation of colonial-era landscapes.
