Description
A striking full length portrait from the late 19th Century showing a hardy barefoot fisherwoman, standing in the harbour, holding a large dogfish by the mouth in each hand. Their tails drape on the floor and weight and gravity to the composition. A fishing boat lies on the sand behind her and more boats can be seen out in the distance on the blue water in the upper right. The painting has a continental feel, possibly French or Swedish, judging by the woman's clothes and hat. The style is reminiscent of a mix of Carl Larsson's drawings, with dark line work, and the frank and rustic nature of subject matter and composition found in the traditional Newlyn School of painting. There is a faint signature that is illegible to the lower left fish's tail. The painting has been fully re-lined. On re-lined canvas.Condition
The painting has been fully re-lined and the wax has heavily discoloured with age. There is a patched loss to the right edge and some light scuffing across the surface. Inspection under UV light reveals some areas of restoration.
