A very finely painted portrait of an elderly lady wearing a large lace bonnet and dark widow's weeds. This delightful portrait wonderfully captures the sitter's relaxed demeanour and half-smile, the handling of light and tone is also noteworthy. Although the high, Empire line dress and bonnet were fashionable in the early 19th century, we can assume as an elderly lady she may not have kept up with the fashion of the day dating this painting to the latter half of the 19th century. The painting is expertly crafted, with great attention given to the sitter's kind facial features. Presented in a substantial black frame with gilt slip. The painting is unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
The painting has undergone several areas of restoration and has been relined. There is a repaired tear to the centre of the canvas with areas of overpainting. Inspection under UV light also reveals several other small tear repairs scattered across the substrate. The restoration work has been carried out to a very high standard. There is some craquelure to the surface. Very minor marks to the frame.
