A very fine and meticulously detailed mid 19th Century miniature portrait, monogrammed by the artist 'L.P.', on a thin ivorine panel. The work depicts a well-dressed portrait of Elizabeth of France, or Madame Elizabeth, sister of Louis XVI, in lace and blue ribbon, mostly likely after several originals by Vigee LeBrun. Elizabeth was guillotined at the culmination of the French Revolution. The artist has used a style typical of the period, with a fine command of the medium.
Well-presented in a contemporary black papier mache frame with brass fittings and acorn oak leaf hanging ring, as shown.
Signed with monogram.In good condition overall, for a picture of this age. The frame has some minor marks and chips, particularly to the left and right sides, as shown. There is a repaired crack just above the oval brass ring and portrait, near the brass acorn fitting. There is surface craquelure to the frame, expected for its type.
