Kenneth Green was a painter and wood engraver, born in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire. He attended the Slade School, 1922-24, and was as a student he was commissioned to paint a portrait at Cambridge University, which later led to others. Within four years of his leaving the Slade, he held his first solo exhibition at the Arlington Gallery, London. He also travelled in the USA, where he showed at the Ferargil Galleries, New York in 1934. Green also showed at the Storran Gallery, London, 1937 and at the RA, RP, RBA, NEAC, in Helsinki, Cairo and Geneva, Switzerland. The multi-faceted Green also designed for the stage and his productions included work for Glyndebourne Opera, Sadlers Wells, and for operas in Holland and Finland. Green was a pupil and friend of Harry Becker who bequeathed much of his work to his pupil. His portrait of James Critten, nine times Mayor of Southwold, hangs in the Town Hall council chamber and his other sitters included poet Cecil Day Lewis, composer Benjamin Britten and Dame Sybil Thorndike the actress. Green was appointed Director of Art at Wellington College,1938-45, and whilst there designed scenery and costumes for Sadlers Wells productions of Mozart's 'Cosi Fan Tutte' in 1944, and Britten's 'Peter Grimes', in 1945. Examples of his work are in the collections of CAS, Birmingham Art Gallery, Bradford Art Gallery and Leeds Art Gallery. A retrospective exhibition of his work was held at Kettle's Yard in 1972.
