Hammond is a self taught artist, who started out selling his work at Hyde Park, London.
In developing his style of traditional marine art, he has spent time crewing various sailing vessels, including The Sir Winston Churchill (a topsail schooner) and Thames barges. These experiences have helped with his understanding of the rigging and working of old sailing ships.
Although marine art is his forte, from fishing villages to battle scenes, he also paints landscapes, specific buildings and street scenes – some of which have been used for puzzles and calendars.
For many years he have maintained a small gallery in Bosham, West Sussex. It is there that you can often find him painting
