There is some professional restoration in the way of a small patched tear in the upper right quadrant that is not visible from the front. Inspection under UV light reveals no other areas of restoration to the painting. There are some small losses and areas of touching up to the gilt frame.

Karl Kaufmann was born in Austria in 1843. He was a student at the Vienna Academy but went on to study in various European countries. He is best know for his studies of Venice but he also produced a number of scenes depicting North Africa.
Kaufmann painted under a number of pseudonyms and his artworks are in public and private collections internationally.
