Description

A large, idyllic pastoral scene by Swabian artist Karl Demetz (1909-1986), captured in an impressionistic style with a warm, harmonious colour palette. Guided by a shepherd and his sheepdog, a flock of sheep are led along a rugged track, their fleeces appearing almost to glow in the golden evening light. The viewer's eye is drawn over the brow of the hill towards an expansive landscape that recedes into the hazy distance, with a small town visible on the valley floor below. Signed to the lower left. Well presented in a gilt frame with a rustic painted finish that complements the tones and style of the work. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

The condition is very good for a picture of this age. Discolouration and craquelure to the paint. Areas of overpainting. Light wear to the frame.

Artist Biography

Karl Demetz (1909-1986) was a Swabian landscape and animal painter. He completed an apprenticeship with Richard Herdtle (1866-1943) - a recognised animal and landscape painter in Stuttgart - before attending the Stuttgart Academy of Fine Arts. He was a soldier from 1940 to 1945, and then a prisoner of war in Yugoslavia until 1949. He continued to paint even during his time as a soldier, painting the landscapes and scenes he saw whilst serving in Russia. After returning to his homeland in 1949, he worked as a freelance artist, focusing on landscape and animal paintings. The Auberlehaus Museum in Trossingen holds examples of his work.
