Jules Laurens was a French artist who was particularly renowned for his studies of the landscape and people of Turkey and Persia. Accompanied by geographer and engineer Xavier Hommaire de Hell on his travels, he made thousands of sketches of costumes and sites. On returning home to France he has a large portfolio of work that were in high demand at the time, exhibiting all of Paris and wider France. He frequently exhibited at the Salon de Paris between 1850 and 1891.
