Josiah Boydell after Rembrandt - 1781 Mezzotint The Preacher and his Wife

Description

A large mezzotint by Josiah Boydell (1752-1817) after a 1641 painting by Rembrandt (1606-1669) depicting Cornelis Claesz Anslo (1592-1646), a Dutch businessman and Mennonite preacher. The original is in the collection of the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin. Although the large scale of the original work evidences Anslo's prosperity in business, he has chosen to be depicted here in his role as a preacher. He is shown in his study with a Bible open on his desk as he turns to speak to his wife, Aeltje Gerritsdr Schouten (1589-1657). The gesture of his hand and his wife's attentive gaze lend emphasis to his words, thereby foregrounding his commitment to spreading the word of God. The work is well presented in a black frame with gilt running patterns. On paper.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age, including some discolouration, light foxing, faint creasing, and small abrasions and tears. Scuffing and small losses to the frame. Despite this, the overall condition is good for a work of this age.
