A rural scene depicting Cove Lane in the village of Old Grassington, North Yorkshire. A pair of cows can be seen wandering down the lane in the distance. Presented glazed in a gilt effect frame with ornate corners. Signed to the lower-right edge. Inscribed with title and signature to the reverse. On watercolour paper.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some foxing and discolouration. Overall in very good condition.

Artist Biography

West was a painter born at Farnhill near Keighley, Yorkshire, who specialised in watercolour land and seascape scenes, particularly of the Norfolk Broads, the Yorkshire Dales, and Yorkshire coast. He studied at Frank Spenlove's Yellow Door School, Beckenham, Kent, and returned to his native Yorkshire and took studios in Keighley and Silsden. West showed at the Walker Art Gallery, Ferens Art Gallery, Royal Cambrian Academy, Norfolk and Norwich Art Circle, Cartwright Hall Museum, and Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. In 1939 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Art and a member of the British Watercolour Society. Bolton Council commissioned eighty paintings from him for their galleries and museums and he was also commissioned by the Duke of Devonshire to paint his favourite horses. West's death was recorded in Bury, Lancashire.
